EAST TIMOR

East Timor. Capital City: Dili. Timor is an island in the Malay Archipelago. East Timor gained independence on May 20, 2002, following a 1999 referendum in which the people voted for independence from Indonesia. At the time of the referendum, violence sparked by pro-Jakarta militiamen left more than 1,000 civilians dead.
